Electroblown titanium dioxide and titanium dioxide/silicon dioxide submicron fibers with and without titania nanorod layer for strontium(II) uptake

Nuclear power is a clean alternative to fossil fuels. However, the use of nuclear energy generates hazardous fission products which 90Sr second most important. To remove Sr2+ from aqueous solutions, we synthesized submicron TiO2 and TiO2/SiO2 composite fibers with Ti: Si molar ratios 3: 1 (3TiO2-1SiO2) 1: (1TiO2-1SiO2) utilizing novel electroblowing technique. After calcination at 500°C, 3TiO2-1SiO2 had predominantly anatase structure portions rutile brookite but crystallites in were smaller due SiO2 component. The 1TiO2-1SiO2 quasi-amorphous. Rutile nanorods grown on by hydrothermal method. rods seemed grow only domains fiber surface, affected their size morphology. In batch adsorption experiments all excellent uptake hydrothermally modified having highest distribution coefficient (Kd) 3490000 mL g−1. results show that both can efficiently adsorb an environment. Hardly any damage was observed column operation test flow rates up 74 h−1 promising for industrial mode wastewater treatment.
